All Fell Down

Part One – Subject Jacob

Chapter One

It was on the day I was born that the aliens first came and on the day I died that they destroyed the earth.

I don’t remember my childhood.  You don’t remember much from before when you’ve be in altostasis.  I have these half memories of my mother singing but though I can remember the tune I can never remember the words or my mother’s voice.  I can’t remember anything about my father or my brothers.  My file says I had a sister too but sometimes I don’t believe the file.  Surely if the file was right about everything I’d remember something, some hint, some fragment other than a wordless tune.   My file says I was born in the north of England on April 17th 2080.  Everyone has that date ingrained in their minds.  Even someone like me who can’t remember anything else knows what that date meant.  April 17th: the day we learned the truth.  The day we learned we were not alone.  The day we learned we had been watched.  The day we learned our fate. The day the Fell came.
